The Alamo
In the heart of downtown San Antonio stands one of the most famous landmarks in American history. Founded in 1718 as a Spanish mission, the Alamo became the site of a legendary 13-day siege in 1836, when a small band of Texan defenders, including Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and William B. Travis, held their ground against the much larger army of General Santa Anna. Though the defenders were overwhelmed, their courage inspired the rallying cry "Remember the Alamo!" Just weeks later, Texas won its independence at the Battle of San Jacinto.
